Welcome back, Bulldogs!

It's been a long, strange spring and summer and now as we head into fall, we'd like to share a few changes we've undergone as an organization. First, we'd like to take this opportunity to welcome our new families to the school community while also welcoming back our old friends.

As you can see from our logo, we are now Friends of Bulldogs. While our community engages in a student-led inquiry toward renaming our school, we have decided to temporarily call ourselves Friends of Bulldogs (or FOB for short) until a permanent name has been selected. Please bear with us as we navigate changes to our website, emails and more.


You may remember we held our annual board elections this past May and welcomed three new members to our board (see full list of board members below). This summer, we were fortunate to add Jim Maggio as our newest member. Jim is a second grade parent and will serve as Treasurer. Welcome Jim!

Additionally, our parent group, formerly known as ABC, and FOB have merged into one cohesive organization in order to resume a strong parent community presence during this challenging year. The parent group will continue to be chaired by Molly Alvarez, Nicholette Maggio and Kimberly Beck and will also continue to host both (virtual) meetings and events. Stay tuned for updates about those coming soon! Both Molly & Nicholette will also serve on the FOB board as well, so welcome aboard, ladies!


As we commenced the 2020/21 school year, CPS asked that school fundraising organizations pause their efforts while the community attempted to get back on its feet. That being said, FOB is working on various ways we can assist our school community and the community-at-large.

UPDATE: we have recently learned we can raise funds to assist with remote learning, therefore we are launching our 14th Annual Fall Fundraiser (remotely) on November 20th, 2020. Our primary goal is to raise spirits within our communityFunds raised will provide upgrades to staff devices, repair damaged devices and a percentage of funds will go to the school's newly created Assistance Program for families in need.

As always,  we welcome all community members to our FOB meetings, which will be on Zoom for the foreseeable future. Our next meeting is on Thursday, October 22nd at 6pm. We will send the link out prior to the meeting.

Dear Friends of Agassiz:

As we start the new year, we would like to thank the current and past Friends of Agassiz Board members, and our parent and donor community, for all the efforts and financial support during the 2018-2019 school year.

Thanks to your hard work, we were able to allocate funds towards:

  • ChromeBooks to provide a 1:1 ratio for students in grades 4-8
  • Replacement of 17 broken teacher laptops for use in planning lessons and teaching student lessons that sync with classroom SmartBoards
  • Materials for visual arts instruction
  • Teacher professional development
  • Savings for capital improvement projects.

Your contributions enabled us to invest in this much needed technology, arts, and teacher training to deliver high-quality instruction to our students.

Strategic Plan for Fundraising

In the last 5 years, we have raised over $500,000, which helps cover CPS budget gaps, strengthen our diverse community and support the school’s Strategic Plan for Fundraising.

Short-term goals include funding arts, drama and dance programming, as well as supporting vital staff positions, investing in classroom technology, providing science lab supplies and repairing playground equipment. Long-term goals include renovating the gymnasium/auditorium.

Fundraising Initiatives

FOB supports Agassiz with a variety of fundraisers and community events throughout the school year. This year, as mentioned above, our fundraisers were on a brief pause but will resume in November. See below for info on our annual fundraisers.

Each fall, the Fun Run (formerly Walk-A-Thon), now in its 14th year, encourages family, friends and neighbors to sponsor students while highlighting our school's commitment to healthy habits. Stay tuned for information on this fundraiser, which is happening remotely on November 20th, 2020.

In winter, the I ♥ Agassiz Pledge Drive gives families the chance to show their appreciation for the school and what they love most. Families are encouraged to donate any amount they're comfortable with, whether it's a one-time amount or monthly.

Spring is host to two fundraisers: the Online Auction and Gala. The annual auction gives 500+ school families, their friends and neighbors across Chicago, plus over 300,000 bidders nationwide, the chance to bid on great items while supporting our school. The Spring Gala is an adults-only night full of fun, bidding and refreshments held in Chicago. Two years ago, the two events brought in $60,000. Last year's event was canceled due to the pandemic.

Community outreach events include monthly Dine Out nights (soon to be Dine In nights) at popular area restaurants, with a portion of proceeds going to the school. It's a delicious way to support local businesses while benefiting our neighborhood school. Past participants include Kirkwood Bar, Potbelly, Chipotle, Pockets and DMK Burger.



FOB has provided financial support for a number of initiatives that would have otherwise been cut due to budget constraints.


All parents and community members are welcome and encouraged to join Friends of Bulldogs. Your participation, support and ideas can help shape Agassiz into the school you want it to be.

Friends of Bulldogs is an all-volunteer group of parents and community members dedicated to making Agassiz Elementary a great school for all students through fundraising and community outreach events.
