Fundraising and Election Update

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Agassiz community for their contributions and donations to our fundraisers this year. It’s been a trying year for all, specifically for those in the CPS world. The strike in the fall, along with a global pandemic, meant a lot less days of in-school learning. Despite these difficult times, our community came together to support Agassiz and we raised over $120,000 (minus expenses) from the shortened year’s fundraisers. We couldn’t have done it without your support so THANK YOU!

FOA held its annual elections this week and we are pleased to announce that we have three new board members joining us this year. These Agassiz parents have stepped up to graciously offer their considerable talents to our board. Please help us welcome new board members: Dana Carman, Alison McGannon and Janice Martinez. All three have been volunteering for many years at Agassiz and each brings unique qualities to the table. We are certain they will help us strive to do the best we can with our fundraising efforts next year.

We will greatly miss our departing board members: Michelle Platts, Alice Driscoll and Dushyant Sharma. Each one has supported FOA’s endeavors with their hard work and efforts to raise funds for Agassiz.

Lastly, please stay tuned for announcements throughout the summer on smaller fundraisers like the dining night outs. We hope these will soon evolve back into dining together at restaurants but if not there will be take-out options as well.

Please feel free to reach out to the FOA board for a copy of our 2019-20 profit and loss report or with any questions.

Wishing you all a safe and restful summer.

In light of the stay-at-home directives in Illinois, FOA has officially canceled our two remaining fundraisers for the school year: the spring gala and online auction. A great deal of effort has been poured into both over the past few months thanks to our online auction co-chairs, Andrea Cordiano and Sandra Richman. We are so grateful to both for their hard work.

We're also grateful to the many businesses that have generously donated to our online auction. We want to share links to their businesses with the hopes that you'll consider supporting them during these difficult times, whether it's purchasing gift cards, picking up a meal or visiting them when Chicago reopens

FOA will continue to raise funds for Agassiz in smaller, community-partnered ways. For this month, we're working with two businesses--Agassiz-parent-owned Matisse Hair Studio (email: for more info) and Madison & Rayne meal service (enter code: AGASSIZ10).

As always, we're grateful to our amazing school community for your continued support and look forward to when we can gather again.

Your fundraising dollars matter!

Your Agassiz fundraising dollars go toward bridging budgetary gaps to provide the materials and opportunities needed to ensure Agassiz fulfills its mission to provide a nurturing and rigorous learning environment for its students.

At the February 5th Local School Council meeting, Principal Weber outlined (and the LSC approved) the direction for the funds raised by FOA in 2019. The addition of new technology, increased math curriculum materials, professional development and more is possible only through the support of our community.

FOA's 2020 annual I Agassiz pledge drive raised over $60,000.

A Note from Principal Weber

Dear Friends of Agassiz:

As we start the new year, we would like to thank the current and past Friends of Agassiz Board members, and our parent and donor community, for all the efforts and financial support during the 2018-2019 school year.

Thanks to your hard work, we were able to allocate funds towards:

  • ChromeBooks to provide a 1:1 ratio for students in grades 4-8
  • Replacement of 17 broken teacher laptops for use in planning lessons and teaching student lessons that sync with classroom SmartBoards
  • Materials for visual arts instruction
  • Teacher professional development
  • Savings for capital improvement projects.

Your contributions enabled us to invest in this much needed technology, arts, and teacher training to deliver high-quality instruction to our students.

Thank you for supporting our school. We could not be Agassiz without you!

Strategic Plan for Fundraising

In the last 5 years, we have raised over $500,000, which helps cover CPS budget gaps, strengthen our diverse community and support the school’s Strategic Plan for Fundraising.

Short-term goals include funding arts, drama and dance programming, as well as supporting vital staff positions, investing in classroom technology, providing science lab supplies and repairing playground equipment. Long-term goals include renovating the gymnasium/auditorium and hiring a full-time arts teacher.

Fundraising Initiatives

FOA supports Agassiz with a variety of fundraisers and community events throughout the school year.

Each fall, the Fun Run (formerly Walk-A-Thon), now in its 13th year, encourages family, friends and neighbors to sponsor students while highlighting our school's commitment to healthy habits.

In winter, the I ♥ Agassiz Pledge Drive gives families the chance to show their appreciation for the school and what they love most. Families are encouraged to donate any amount they're comfortable with, whether it's a one-time amount or monthly.

Spring is host to two fundraisers: the Online Auction and Gala. The annual auction gives 500+ Agassiz families, their friends and neighbors across Chicago, plus over 300,000 bidders nationwide, the chance to bid on great items while supporting Agassiz. The Spring Gala is an adults-only night full of fun, bidding and refreshments held in Chicago. Last year the two events brought in $60,000.

Community outreach events include monthly Dine Out for Agassiz nights at popular area restaurants, with a portion of proceeds going to the school. It's a delicious way to support local businesses while benefiting our neighborhood school. Past participants include Kirkwood Bar, Potbelly, Home Run Inn and DMK Burger.

FOA has provided financial support for a number of initiatives that would have otherwise been cut due to budget constraints.

All parents and community members are welcome and encouraged to join Friends of Agassiz. Your participation, support and ideas can help shape Agassiz into the school you want it to be.

All meetings are at 6pm in Music Room and babysitting available by Mr. Oni (PE teacher) in the gym for $5/child.

Stay tuned for meeting dates for the 2020/2021 year. This past school year meeting dates were:

August 28
September 25
October 30
November 20
January 15
February 26
March 25
April 29
May 27 (Annual elections)
